NPower Services, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting adults with disabilities, is excited to announce the launch of FolkAbility, a new acoustic band that puts musicians with disabilities in the spotlight alongside neurotypical performers.
An offshoot of the popular RockAbility program, FolkAbility offers a distinct acoustic sound and a more intimate performance style, creating a warm, welcoming, and interactive musical experience. While RockAbility is known for its rock-orchestra feel—sometimes with over 20 musicians on stage—FolkAbility features a smaller ensemble of nine or fewer, delivering a mellow, coffeehouse-inspired vibe.
“We got the idea for FolkAbility in 2024, about a year after RockAbility began gigging,” says Lori Weber, founder of RockAbility. “We quickly realized that the large-format band wasn’t ideal for all of our musicians or every venue that wanted to host us. So, we formed a smaller core group that’s been rehearsing ever since. It’s exciting to see them emerging as their own unique band.”
FolkAbility’s repertoire spans popular folk rock songs from the past 50 years, with occasional original compositions and member-chosen songs that hold personal meaning. Their debut performance took place at Tune Traders at the West Woods in January, marking the start of their journey toward additional shows.
“That first performance really sparked something,” says Anne Marie Wolfe, NPower Services’ Project Coordinator and FolkAbility’s Artistic Director. “The group has been rehearsing two to three times a month, and we’re thrilled about this year’s lineup of shows. We’re excited to get things moving.”
FolkAbility’s 2025 Performance Schedule (so far!):
- Maple Town Tune Traders – May 22, Veterans Legacy Woods
- Milestones Autism Conference – June 10, John Carroll University
- Neurodiverse Culture Festival – Oct. 18, Hiram House Camp
- Cuyahoga DD Community Partner Trick or Treat – Oct. 25, Independence Middle School
- Additional performances are currently being considered and will be announced once confirmed.
